You better get on the run from the cops as we are back with part 7 of our Grand Theft Auto retrospective!
Grand Theft Auto Advance (2004) Game Boy AdvanceWhile not the first Grand Theft Auto game to be on a Nintendo system, seeing GTA on anything Nintendo related was still kind of weird. This actually started its life as port of Grand Theft Auto III! Obviously, that was far too ambitious and this idea was scrapped and Grand Theft Auto Advance became its own thing, which is actually kind of a prequel to GTA III.
As you would expect, Grand Theft Auto Advance has a top down view like the classic games. But this time it is a bit more polished and they have tried to give it a 3D kind of feel and things like the map, the cars, and the weapons were clearly inspired by the 3D games so, in a way, Grand Theft Auto Advance is like a mix of the old GTA games and the 3D ones.
The story sees you playing as a criminal called Mike, who along with his buddy Vinnie are going to do one last job and then leave the life of crime behind. Of course, this job goes horribly wrong, Vinnie dies and as Mike, you swear revenge on him and the criminal world of Liberty City! The story was not as great as the other games, but to be fair it was all told through pictures and text.
Grand Theft Auto Advance was a pretty decent throwback to the older GTA games. It was met with rather mixed reviews at the time of release, mainly because people had gotten so used to the 3D Grand Theft Auto games so going back to this was very hard for some people.
Red Dead Redemption is one of the games that us folks in the Mods R Us office are super excited about and we thought it would be fun to look at where this series started.
Red Dead Revolver (2004) PlayStation 2, XboxWhile these days Red Dead is known as one of the major RockStar games. The interesting thing about this series is that it started life out as a Capcom property. Capcom was working on the game in 2002, RockStar bought the game, made some major changes to it. RockStar increased the violence and gave it a more “spaghetti western” feel than what Capcom was working on and the rest is history.
Red Dead Revolver sees you playing the role of Red Harlow. A gunslinger in the 1880’s who is trying to get justice for his parents who were brutally murdered. The game is actually very story driven and the voice acting for the time was some of the best around. It may be a little predictable in places, but the story was something that was heavily praised at the time of release.
The gameplay of Red Dead Revolver is that of an action 3rd person game. Red Harlow is an expert with guns and you will be going along looking for justice by putting a beating on and bullets in any person who gets in your way. Red Dead Revolver is fairly linear and does not have the massive open worlds of a GTA or Red Dead Redemption. But it tells its story very well and is fun to play.
At the time of release, Red Dead Revolver was very well received and of course, it set the stage for RockStar to created Red Dead Redemption. As of right now, you can pick up Red Dead Revolver for just a few bucks and it is well worth playing.
You may think the title of today’s blog is kind of weird as Battlefront II is not actually here yet, but we are not talking about Star Wars Battlefront II that is coming out in November and getting its beta later this week. But the original Star Wars Battlefront II from 2005!
How crazy is this? It has been announced that GOG and Steam are doing some kind of team up and players who have the game on Steam can play against those who purchased it on GOG. It has been a very long time since the Battlefront II servers were shut down, but we are sure people will be very excited about this as Battlefront II had a ton of content.
Now the bad news is that this is for PC players only. So those of us who have the game on Xbox or PlayStation 2 are out of luck. To be fair it would be near impossible for the old consoles to get back online. But it is still really awesome how Disney has brought this back for PC players.
We have even heard some people say that this is a very good thing. Not just because Star Wars Battlefront II is awesome. But because if successful, it could mean that they might consider bringing back some of the other older Star Wars games and bringing them online as well.
As you can tell, here at Mods “R” Us, we could not be any more excited for Star Wars Battlefront II (we mean the new one!) and getting the beta this week, plus the chance to play the original Battlefront II just adds to that excitement.
The Grand Theft Auto V - GTA 5
Today is a sad, but also kind of fun day as you are joining us for our last installment of our Grand Theft Auto retrospective.
Grand Theft Auto V(2013/14/15) Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PCGrand Theft Auto V was a monster of a game. It was far larger in scope than any other GTA game had been before and even now a couple of years later, people are still finding amazing new things in this game.
The story this time around saw you play the role of three different characters. You start off as Franklin a young dude who is just trying to scrape by. He tries to reposes a car from a man called, Michael who is a former career criminal who is trying to lay low after a job went to hell. Michael takes a liking to Franklin and takes him under his wing. Before long a run in with the feds, rival criminals and a whole load of other stuff from the past being brought up. Michael and Franklin cross paths with Trevor a lunatic who once worked with Michael and a guy who hates Michael, but at the same time needs to work with him.
Grand Theft Auto V allows you to switch between all three characters on the fly once they have all been unlocked. You will need to be a certain character to do a certain mission and RockStar created a fantastic story here with three diverse characters that despite their flaws, you care about. As well as a great story, GTA V features a ton of content. There are bank heists, the stock market, scuba diving, base jumping and of course a ton of other things you can run around doing. There was also Grand Theft Auto Online which was an MMO set in the GTA universe and it has built up quite the following.
A year after release, Grand Theft Auto V was released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in a much higher quality and also a first person mode, a first for the series. The following year, 2015, Grand Theft Auto V was released on PC.
GTA V is regarded as one of the best games ever made. Grand Theft Auto 6 whatever it is, is going to have to be something special to top it.
